With the goal to sustain Big Band music in Tulsa and provide area musicians and audiences with an opportunity to experience this wonderful form of entertainment, the Sounds of Music Orchestra was incorporated in 1979 as a 501C3 non-profit corporation. The Orchestra features some of the local area’s outstanding musicians with diverse musical backgrounds and a wide variety of professional activity. Members of the orchestra donate their time & talent and are not paid. However, the Orchestra does charge for it services and monies raised beyond expenses are used to fund our *scholarship program in support school band activities. Due to our non-profit status, hiring the Sounds may be tax deductible. We also consider requests to perform for non-profit fund raiser activities.
Do you need a Big Band to play all that great swing and dance music for your party, wedding, corporate function, special occasion, or concert? The “Sounds” is a true (17 piece) Big Band with a 500 tune library that can meet your special needs. We are Tulsa, Ok based and have performed in Tulsa and around Green Country for over 30 years. Please see the “Book Us” tab on our Home page for more information. You may also follow us on Facebook.
*Story of the Lewis B. Norris Scholarship
Lew Norris was a trumpet player during the early years of the Sounds of Music Orchestra. His enthusiasm for playing his trumpet and his love of the Sounds Orchestra were infectious and sparked other band members to become as dedicated as he was. Cancer attacked Lew at a young age, but as long as he could hold his trumpet, he refused to quit playing. Near the end, he had to be strapped into his chair so he could sit up and play. It is in his loving memory that we dedicate our scholarship fund. We thank you for your support.
